Path to Citizenship Day 2013

We are hosting Path to Citizenship Day to provide legal assistance for a long and intimidating process that can prevent lawful permanent residents from pursuing their dream of U.S. citizenship,” said Angélica Millán of LSNC’s Ukiah office. “Our goal is to create a safe space to ask questions, get answers, and take the next step in becoming a U.S. citizen.” Press Release Path to Citizenship Day 2013.FB-1

Happy National Fair Housing Month!

Our Shasta Regional Office hosted the 15th annual Fair Housing Workshop last Thursday and it was a smashing success. Each year we educate excited participants, mostly landlords and housing providers, from throughout Northern California. 200 people registered for the workshop this year. We had in-depth presentations on an array of fair housing issues and interactive hypotheticals for the audience.

Workshop presenters included Jane Shandler and Catherine Ross-Perry from HUD, Jeremy Fong from DFEH, Kyanna Williams from LSNC, Gary Rhoades from the City of Santa Monica and Catherine Bishop from the National Housing Law Project. Cynthia Abbott from HUD moderated the event.

Each workshop participant took home a comprehensive fair housing law guide, received a certificate of attendance at the end, and had the rare opportunity to chat with fair housing law experts over breakfast, lunch and during breaks. The workshop’s evaluations were extremely positive. We had one participant come up and say that he lives outside of our area but comes to this workshop as it is the best he has found.

Program Highlight

Each year, roughly 12,000 tenants face eviction in Sacramento County. For each of these tenants, the consequences of losing in court are dire: a large money judgment against them and ruined credit; homelessness in the worst case scenario and a hasty, unplanned move in the best. Yet until this year, only about one in four [...]
